change of space

After giving it some thought for a little bit, I've decided to move where I post over to tumblr. More often than not I just have one or two photos to share or a just a brief something to write, which doesn't necessarily merit a whole post. So I feel that tumblr will be a better fit for me.

You can find me here (yes, new name!), at Roots Planted Deep. It will primarily be a source for personal photos and words, but the beauty of tumblr is that it allows me the ability to easily re-blog other things I find inspirational, so there will be some of that on there as well.

Thanks to those who have followed me here for the past several years! I appreciate it.

Garmisch

Over this past weekend, we finally made it to the famed "Garmisch" that I hear everyone talking about around here, and I can now see why people love it so much. The mountains here are pretty spectacular! We stayed in a little town right outside the hustle and bustle of Garmisch, called Oberammergau. It was pretty incredible to wake up to some of these views, and to just experience some more of the amazing beauty that God has created here.

Most of these are just quick shots I captured with my iphone as we walked along. It is definitely a place I would love to come back to though, and spend more time taking "real" pictures of. :)

home for the holidays

 

It’s ended up being a bit longer of a vacation from blogging than I had originally planned! More than just the break for the holidays that I was expecting.  Life has a good habit of catching one up in it. :)

We were really blessed to be able to head back to the States for the holidays and spend it with family this Christmas. It definitely proved to be an interesting trip as we took what is called a “Space Available” flight through the military, which is fantastic since it is free, but has it’s own quirks that go along with it as well (as with most things that are free ;) ). It took us a few days to finally get a flight out from Germany to Massachusetts, but we finally made it. Waiting around gave me an awesome opportunity though to get alot of reading in, and work on a pair of socks. So it had it’s plus’s as well. :)

I didn’t end up getting too many photos while we were there for the holidays, as I was spending most of my time just  enjoying the company of family that I haven’t seen for awhile. With that said, though, I was still was able to spend a little bit of time taking photos around the place where we were staying.

A crazy storm sprang up one morning when we were about to head out to breakfast with my grandparents, and we got a call from the folks at the front desk, saying that everyone staying in the cottages should stay put, and not leave for the mainland. There were some strong winds, and since Fourth Cliff (where we were staying) is a peninsula, waves were coming up from the shore, and flooding the roads. I think that was the closest thing I’ve seen to hurricane force winds. It was pretty intense! Thankfully it seemed only minimal damage was done to the houses directly on the water. I saw a few stairs washed out, but other than that, it seemed all else was alright. One of the oddest things, though, was that while the storm was going on, what I had at first thought was snow mounding up on the roadside, and swirling about in the air, really turned out to foam from the ocean that had whipped up, and was covering the streets... it was the strangest sight!

After the storm had abated, and we were waiting for the flooding on the roads to go down, I put on my trusty Bean boots, took my camera and spent some time walking around the marshy areas, snapping a few photos.

Although it is a little belated, I hope that everyone had a Merry Christmas, and a happy New Year!

Winter Days

snöflinga hat

With Fall upon us, and winter coming up fast on its heels, all this cooler weather has me wanting to get into knitting again. Ravelry has been giving me some great inspiration for lovely things to make, and I have a number of projects saved on there that I'd like to try my hand at. Not sure how many of those things will actually be made this season, but it's nice to have ideas in mind. :)

The snöflinga hat (from Wiksten) was super easy to make, and knitted up really quickly as well, which is always nice. I just used some of the cream colored Fisherman's Wool in my stash for this first one, but I really would love to try it in some other colors as well. I'm thinking a Colonial blue would be nice, or maybe even red. There is a little yarn shop that I spotted near our local grocery store, so I'll have to stop in there and see what they offer.

Speaking of local shops, though, reminds me of my endeavors to find a fabric store this past Monday. Being new and all here, I'm still learning where to go to get my craft/sewing supplies, and earlier this week it proved to be an interesting experience in itself!

I had heard of a local shop only a few minutes away from our house which I was pretty excited about, since the other ones are a little bit of a drive to get to. My dad had taken the GPS on a business trip, so I only had google maps to rely on, which isn't always great since alot of the time the roads here don't have street signs. Long story short, what should have been a 13 minute drive turned into a couple of hours driving around the town trying to find the place. Using the little bit of German I know, and the little bit of English some of the people knew I stopped several time and asked for directions, but to no avail. Everyone was super friendly, but unfortunately when there aren't any street names, so the directions consist of "go a few meters, turn left, then another left at the church, then 20 meters and a right, etc." and there is construction going on in the town, it's not very conducive to finding a place. So I still have no idea where this crazy shop is. After stopping for the fourth time and asking for directions, and not being able to follow them, I called it quits and went home.

 I'm hoping tomorrow I will have better luck, though, as I plan on heading out there again to find it, except this time with the GPS. :) Living in another country is such an interesting experience... it really takes me out of my "comfort zone" sometimes, but once I get over the uncomfortableness of it, it's pretty fun. :)

October Snow

 This morning I woke to a white world outside. I saw on the weather forecast last night that it was supposed to snow, but I half expected it not to happen after all. It has been such awhile since I have seen snow at this time of year! I don't know if it's normal for Germany, but it sure was an unexpected treat. :)

I'm have a bunch of photos that I plan to blog about pretty soon from our last trip... to Ireland! It was such a wonderful time and I'm looking forward to sharing the beauty of the place with you all.
