Already in the first chapters of this book, I've been made to think deeply. Here are a few quotes that have challenged me:
- " I know of no other way to triumph over sin long-term than to gain a distaste for it because of a our superior satisfaction in God." - John Piper
- "The New Testament has lots to say about self-denial, but not about self-denial as an end in itself. We are told to deny ourselves and to take up our crosses in order that we may follow Christ..." - C.S. Lewis (emphasis added)
- " The longing to be happy is a universal human experience, and it is good, not sinful.
We should never try to deny or resist our longing to be happy, as though it were a bad impulse. Instead, we should seek to intensify this longing and nourish it with whatever will provide the deepest and most enduring satisfaction.
The deepest and most enduring happiness is found only in God. Not from God, but in God."
- John Piper (emphasis added)
"The chief end of man is to glorify God
by
enjoying Him forever."
